I am available to assist clients who seek change, and desire to take action toward making it happen. Because destructive habits and negative thoughts can often take a massive toll on our relationships with ourselves and others, I am committed to helping those who are seeking a way out of the chaos.

Using principles from rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as my guide, I help clients gain the tools they need to navigate through tough times and emotions so that in the future they will be better equipped to help themselves spiritually and emotionally.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at University of North Texas and my Master of Arts in Professional Counseling at Texas Wesleyan University. For over 20 years I have been honing my craft working for several of the best inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment settings in the DFW area, where I have learned what it takes to empower clients to get where they want to go. The bulk of my experience has been in the following areas:

  • Addiction (Drugs and Alcohol, Food, Gambling, Sex, Religion, etc.)
  • Anxiety and Phobias
  • PTSD (Posttraumatic stress disorder)
  • Obsessive Thoughts/Compulsive Behaviors
  • Eating Disorders
  • Abuse/Trauma
  • Depression
  • Grief
  • Couples/Family Counseling
  • Adolescent Counseling dealing with issues many teens face today including peer pressure, self-  esteem, body image, sexuality & gender, bullying, depression, anxiety, and anger management.
  • Life Transitions (Job Loss/Change, Divorce, Marriage, Geographic Relocation, etc.)

As a client of mine, you may be asked to journal, write a letter, or do something else which will help us further examine the problems you are having and move forward in the change process.

When I am not counseling, I enjoy devoting time to my other craft…music! I am also an outdoor enthusiast and love to camp and hike.

If you would like to schedule an appointment, please contact us at 940-395-6586 . We look forward to working with you!

Carey Nottingham, MS, LPC

Serving Children, Adolescents, Adults and Families

Carey

I have been passionate about helping others for many years and embarked upon the journey towards counseling by first obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from South University. Once completed, I earned a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University, with a specialty in Child-Centered Play Therapy, training with leaders in the top-ranked play therapy program from the University of North Texas (UNT).
I have provided and have witnessed the powers of play promote growth and development. Using play therapy, I communicate, “I am here for you, I understand, and I care,” with the goals of helping children learn to identify their feelings and express their emotions in a safe and accepting environment. I believe doing so encourages children to develop greater self-control, a more positive self, and greater confidence.

One of the biggest pieces of my work includes working with parents. My hope is that the progress made endures long after the session has ended. As I am only with the children for 1 hour each week, I understand how important the nurturing parent-child relationship is for every family. I am here to listen, understand, and encourage the strengthening of those relationships.

In addition to helping children and their families, I am also passionate about my work with teens and adults. At times, one may be faced with challenges in life that impact thoughts and emotions in a way that can cause one to become stuck. Trauma, anxiety, and depression can leave one feeling powerless in life and in relationship with others. Guided by the principles of rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), my commitment is to help clients identify and access those resources, inherent in everyone, that are necessary to nurture and strengthen emotional and spiritual well-being.

When not helping individuals and their families at HeadSpace, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, and I love cooking and exploring new foods and flavors. My son’s cat, Buck, holds a special place in my heart and brings me great joy and laughter.
